My car got stolen, my house was broken into 3 times in the last month, what's going on in this place?

It's not only me. I heard many people complaining including Ticos about the escalating crime in this country.

If this keeps up, CR will be void of tourist soon.

It's probably old news by now but I was watching CNN and saw news crawl where it said that 5.0 earthquake shook costa rica. i thought orignally maybe that's what this thread was gonna be about.

were you affected by that also? that'd be a helluva whammy.

I was talking to a tico friend the other day, and he seems to blame the escalating crime on the various migrations from countries such as Nicaragua and Colombia both with a very strong militar background

Yes, common sense. People come here and for some reason do things they wouldn't even think of doing back home.

PS The earthquake was nothing. Just a little rattle.

Nanuk,

I have been living here for 4 years and never been robbed before until this year.

This place is getting out of control.

not for nothing ,but I've been here for 10 years, worked in the Del Rey, Royal Dutch and walked home to my on the other side of the red zone in the middle of the night a few times, never have been robbed, beaten, stabeed or even killed. Why would you say that didn't happen to me? You could say that being from Miami you learn to be a little more careful, I guess. Alarm system in my house. Learned to tip the guy watching my car. Just little things.

is that right!

I'm going to let you all know that on channel 7 the other night there was a small segment about the crime in our streets. In San Jose don't walk around with expensive items like jewelry, cell phones, walk mans and so on. Now, there is also crime in every other part of Costa Rica and getting worse. The gov. really doesn't seem to care. The people here are getting out of control. What can we do to teach people to respect one another? I came here 10 years ago as I said before, there was alot less crime than now, and I believe there was alot more respect for one another.

You know this sounds like the beginning of becoming the next Mexico. There everyone thought that crime was just something that happened in the big bad capital, people in Veracruz where I owned a house told me that only "pinche chilangos (term used for people in Mexico City)" lived with crime. My first trip to CR I heard the same thing, that all the bad shit only happens in San Jose. Well fast forward a couple of years and sure enough crime was in Veracruz and just about everywhere. People became immune to it, they started moving into gated areas, hired worthless rent a cops, got escorts and armed guards...I mean stuff you couldn't believe. The government's response? Ban cell phones being used in banks to prevent robberies and create a new police force mostly with guys from the old one. Ridiculous. The crime spread because economy didn't get better and the thieves were opportunistic. When everyone figured out how to slow them down in Mexico City they went to other cities where people weren't ready for them, and then onto the next city and so forth. CR the last time I went seemed to be getting that way, "crime is up because of the Nicas and Colombians and we can't do a thing about them, so be smart and hope for the best". Sad to see it happening almost all over again to another place, no one should have to just accept crime when it hardly existed before.

it is really sad. I'm sure the Costa Rican posters would agree that the image we like to have of CR is the one our grandparents have shared with us. But now you get killed for a cell phone, I don't understand the hatred in these people, who can't just steal anymore, they have to hurt the person they're robbing... i hope the government gets tougher on these lazy idiots

I'm guessing Costa Rica must have some strong gun control laws. Otherwise I would expect these thugs would not be so brazen.
